-42°F. No electricity, no shops, nothing we use today. How did humans survive? The answer is not in our bodies. It is outside them. Our ancestors' bodies were never built for Ice Age cold, yet around 30,000 years ago they reached 71° North in Siberia. Bone needles, tailored clothing, houses made of mammoth bones and food stored in permafrost together formed a loop that turned cold from a problem of the body into a problem of design. In this video: Trenton Holliday's 1997 study, whose result was the opposite of what you would expect The roughly 50,000-year-old bone needle from Denisova Cave The Sungir burials and about 13,000 mammoth ivory beads The mammoth bone houses of Mezhyrich Permafrost, or using the cold itself as a freezer Lice DNA and the woven cloth impressions from Pavlov as clues to how old clothing is How your own layering habits and winter kitchen still follow the same old logic A note on accuracy: some points are still debated among researchers, such as what the pits at Mezhyrich were used for. Present-day Arctic communities are also not identical to Ice Age people, so those comparisons are hints, not proof. Research behind many of the claims in this video: Holliday (1997), Body proportions in Late Pleistocene Europe and modern human origins, Journal of Human Evolution Pitulko et al. (2004), The Yana RHS site: humans in the Arctic before the Last Glacial Maximum, Science Kittler, Kayser and Stoneking (2003), Molecular evolution of Pediculus humanus and the origin of clothing, Current Biology Toups et al. (2011), Origin of clothing lice indicates early clothing use by anatomically modern humans in Africa, Molecular Biology and Evolution Adovasio, Soffer and Klima (1996), Upper Palaeolithic fibre technology: interlaced woven finds from Pavlov I, Czech Republic, c. 26,000 years ago, Antiquity Zara Socho is a Hindi 2D animated documentary channel about human history, prehistory, survival and civilization.
