A question of psychology that will never be fully answered and was pondered in Norse mythology. Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungandr are the three monstrous children of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, and their story is one of the most fatalistic threads in Norse mythology. When the gods learned of a prophecy that these three would bring destruction upon them, they didn't wait to see what the children would become — Odin cast the serpent Jörmungandr into the sea (where he grew so vast he encircled the entire world, biting his own tail), banished Hel to rule over the realm of the dishonored dead, and had the gods raise Fenrir among themselves, only to bind him in increasingly desperate chains once he grew too large and terrifying to control. The final chain, Gleipnir, was forged by dwarves from impossible things — the sound of a cat's footsteps, a woman's beard, a mountain's roots — and required Týr to sacrifice his hand in Fenrir's jaws as a show of good faith before the binding, a betrayal Fenrir never forgot. This is where the "born or made" question hits hardest: the prophecy alone condemned these three before they'd done anything, and the gods' fear and pre-emptive cruelty — exile, imprisonment, mutilation — arguably manufactured the very vengeance they were trying to prevent. Fenrir was a wolf pup the gods raised and then chained; Hel was a girl handed a kingdom of the dead before she'd lived; Jörmungandr was thrown into the sea as an infant. By Ragnarök, all three fulfill their destined roles — Fenrir devours Odin, Jörmungandr and Thor kill each other, Hel's realm supplies the dead's ship — but the myth leaves it ambiguous whether they were always monsters, or whether the gods' treatment of them is what shaped monsters out of children.
