THE IRON AND THE ANOINTING Movement III — The Anointing Oil Part IV of V — Christmas Day, Eight Hundred The Carolingian Transformation · Rome, AD 800 THE STORY A king kneels before an altar. A pope raises a golden crown. And an empire is reborn. Christmas Day, Eight Hundred brings The Iron and the Anointing to one of the defining moments of early medieval European history. On 25 December AD 800, Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Lombards, attends Christmas Mass in St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pope Leo III places an imperial crown upon his head. The assembled congregation acclaims him emperor. Three centuries after the end of the Western Roman Empire, an emperor once again rules from the Frankish West. But this is not simply the restoration of an ancient title. It is the culmination of a transformation that began when the Carolingians acquired power while the Merovingian kings still occupied their thrones. Charles Martel commanded without a crown. Pippin III replaced the old dynasty and received the Church's anointing. Now Charlemagne receives something greater than kingship. The imperial crown. Frankish military power, Christian religious authority and the memory of Rome converge in a single ceremony. Yet the meaning of that moment is not without contradiction. Does the emperor receive his authority from God, through the Church, or through the power he already commands? And can a new empire truly inherit the authority of one that disappeared centuries before? The old Merovingian mythology has given way to a new language of sacred legitimacy. Blood has become anointing. Kingship has become empire. The past has been rewritten to explain the present. But beneath the splendour of Rome, the living chain of generations continues. The crown changes hands. Life continues beyond it. Across three movements, it travels from the pagan northern seaways and the mythology of wyrd and Ragnarök, through the sacred blood of the Merovingian kings, to the Carolingian dynasty and Charlemagne's coronation in AD 800. Behind its kings, crowns and empires lies a quieter story: ordinary human life passing from one generation to the next. The true inheritance was never the crown. It was life itself. HISTORY, MYTH & INTERPRETATION Charlemagne's coronation by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day AD 800 is a documented historical event. The ceremony established a new imperial title in Western Europe, although the Eastern Roman Empire continued to exist in Constantinople. The political meaning of the coronation, including Charlemagne's intentions and the relationship between papal and imperial authority, remains a subject of historical debate. Christmas Day, Eight Hundred interprets the ceremony as the culmination of the Carolingian transformation from hereditary sacred kingship to Christian imperial authority. Dialogue, private reflections and symbolic imagery are creative interpretations.
