Sylvester Stallone, now 80, has spoken for the first time about what building the Rocky and Rambo body did to him — in a New York Times Magazine profile published this weekend. He calls it an obsession, says it took "a terrible toll," and adds four words that tell you how long he's held it: "You heard it here first." But the part nobody will quote is what happened to his career the year he finally stopped.
Every headline about this Sylvester Stallone interview will lead with the same two words and the same figure. This video doesn't, and deliberately repeats none of the specifics he gave — those details help nobody. What it covers instead is his own account, in his own words: how preparing for the Rocky films stopped being preparation, his phrase for what it became, and the verdict he reached forty years later. Then it goes somewhere the coverage won't: Cop Land, the 1997 film where Stallone played an overweight, partially deaf New Jersey sheriff — a role with no physique to maintain. He says it left him "somewhat liberated." He also says that afterwards things went "sideways" and he "fell out of grace with Hollywood." He does not claim one caused the other, and neither does this video — but he put those two things in the same answer, in that order. It ends with where he is now at 80, having his best run in years playing a character who doesn't need a body at all.
