Maosun Fishing Port (卯澳漁港) is a historic century-old fishing village and port located in Fulian Village, Gongliao District, New Taipei City, along the northeastern coast of Taiwan.
Basic Information & History
• Geographical Location: Situated west of Sandiao Cape, nestled between Lailai Mountain and Maosun Bay, right next to Magang.
• Name Origin: The name comes from its bay shape, which resembles the ancient Chinese character "Mao" (卯) when viewed from the air.
• Historical Development: First settled in the mid-Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. In 1626, the Spanish landed in the Sandiao area and ruled this region.
• Fishery Characteristics: It is Taiwan's first designated "culture-based fishery demonstration zone." Traditional fishing methods include small sampans, handlining, drift nets, and hand-harvesting local specialties like agar gel, gracilaria, and abalone.
Key Attractions & Architectural Features
• Traditional Stone Houses: The village preserves a large number of traditional northeastern stone houses. They are built in two main styles: "parallel masonry" (neatly stacked, usually belonging to wealthy families) and "random masonry" (built by ordinary households).
• The Wu Family Two-Story Stone House: A late 19th-century stone mansion featuring red tiles and eight gun-slots. It was used as a scallop processing plant and rice mill during the Japanese colonial period and was registered as a New Taipei City Historic Building on February 24, 2021.
• Liyang Temple: One of the very few temples in Taiwan that enshrines the "Basket-Holding Guanyin" (觀音菩薩).
• Local Delicacies: Famous for fresh local seafood including neritic squid, abalone, barnacles, and local agar jelly.
