He Biked 74,000 km Alone. The Hardest Part Wasn't the Biking. Yo Munir Ep 57 Samer Abouhamad

Samer Abouhamad has taken the path less traveled. He left his expected path of a real estate career in New York, went to Beirut after the 2020 port explosion, and pedaled out of his parents' driveway in Brookline, MA. Three and a half years later he had ridden 74,000+ km across six continents and 60+ countries, solo and self supported, sleeping wherever strangers would let him. In Episode 57, Rob and Munir speak with Samer about why starting is harder than any mountain pass, what he learned about strangers, why you should be comfortable along, and how to keep going when you're back home and the road is pedicab in Boston. We also get into family games (Catan, Spit, Werewolf), his mom Rania Matar's photography, packing everything for 61 countries, and a mixtape of songs for the open road, including ones that could get you through Indiana. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 The hardest part is starting 01:30 Meet Samer 04:00 Growing up Lebanese American, and the games 09:45 Front-row seat to his mom’s photography career 15:00 Real estate in New York, then COVID 17:30 The Beirut port explosion and rebuilding Karantina 24:45 Biking Lebanon: surf, bike, ski in a day 28:30 Peru, Morocco, the Sahara, and why strangers are good 32:30 Telling his parents, and the first pedal stroke 35:00 What he actually packed 38:30 Did he ever want to quit? 40:30 Microadventures and doing things alone 43:30 Helping others is helping yourself 45:00 Life after the trip: Alps, ultra-endurance races, Uganda 49:00 Pedicab stories in Boston 52:15 Mixtape: songs for the open road 🚴 Follow Samer: https://samerbikes.com/ |   / samer.bikes   |   / samer-abouhamad-8a77178a   📺 Subscribe for more:    / @yomunir   📱 Yo Munir on Instagram:   / yo.munir   👔 Find Munir on LinkedIn:   / munirhaddad   👔 Find Robert on LinkedIn:   / robert-haddad-88670   🛍️ Support us, Yo Munir Merch: https://www.yomunir.com/yo-store 🎵 Yo Munir on TikTok:   / yomunir   Comment below: what’s your favorite road trip song?
