How do couples manage money when the bills come in? We test 11 different approaches, using a summer holiday as the stress test. Which couple are you, and which one were your parents?
Who brings the pay home, who decides where it goes, and who has the final say? We follow one couple, Tom and Emma, through 11 approaches to relationship finance, from the joint pot to strict “your zone, my zone” splits, and test every one against the same pressure point. Along the way, we uncover the unspoken financial dynamics that so often drive conflict.
In 1972, almost half of American marriages ran on his wage alone. Today that figure is 23%, and in 29% of marriages husband and wife earn about the same (Pew Research Centre). But earning the money and controlling it are two very different powers. By looking at the division of labour and daily budgeting, we show the silent agreements that decide the balance of power at home.
You’ll see:
The joint pot, where nobody keeps score until somebody does
Fixed contributions and “your zone, my zone” splits
When she holds the purse, and when he does
When she earns more and keeps the extra
When she earns more and carries everything
When he runs the home, and when he just lives there
Tell us in the comments: which of the 11 couples are you right now, and which number were your parents? And what’s one money rule from your family that your partner found strange?

MAWO explores what scientists, doctors and anthropologists have found about men and women. Tom and Emma are fictional characters, and this video is for education and entertainment, not financial advice.
