How Did Spartans Raise Their Boys?

How did Spartans raise their boys? At seven years old you were taken from your mother, given one cloak for the whole year, starved on purpose and whipped not for stealing, but for getting caught. Sparta built the most feared army in Greece one boy at a time. It inspected newborns, hunted its own slaves at night, paid in iron bars too heavy to steal, and answered a king's threat with a single word. And then, slowly, it ran out of Spartans — not because of Persia, but because of its own rules.
