The walk begins in Malasaña, one of Madrid’s most distinctive neighborhoods, known for its cafés, terraces, independent shops and lively street atmosphere. From there, the route heads through Fernando VI and Calle del Barquillo towards Gran Vía, one of the capital’s most iconic avenues, famous for its monumental architecture, theatres, shops and illuminated façades.
The walk continues down Calle de la Montera to Puerta del Sol, the symbolic heart of Madrid. Don’t miss the Kilometre Zero plaque, El Oso y el Madroño and the clock of the Real Casa de Correos.
From Sol, the route enters historic Madrid through Calle Mayor, Calle de Postas and the Plaza Mayor area, with its narrow streets, traditional façades and arcades. This is also the perfect place to try one of Madrid’s best-known specialties: the bocadillo de calamares.
The walk then continues through Calle de Toledo, Cuchilleros and Puerta Cerrada before entering La Latina. Along Cava Baja, you’ll find some of Madrid’s classic taverns and tapas bars, ideal for trying croquetas, patatas bravas, huevos rotos, or simply enjoying a vermouth or a caña.
The route passes through Plaza del Humilladero, Puerta de Moros and Plaza de los Carros, before returning through the quieter historic streets around Calle de Segovia and Calle del Cordón to Plaza de la Villa, one of the most beautiful corners of old Madrid.
From there, the walk heads back towards Puerta del Sol, continues through Calle de Sevilla and Calle de Alcalá, and returns to Gran Vía and Plaza del Callao, one of the busiest and most energetic areas of central Madrid.
The final section returns to Malasaña through Mesonero Romanos, Ballesta and Corredera Baja de San Pablo, finishing around Plaza de San Ildefonso, surrounded by cafés, terraces and local street life.
This route is perfect for first-time visitors, combining Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, historic Madrid, Plaza Mayor, La Latina, tapas, Plaza de la Villa, Callao and Malasaña in one continuous walk.
