Opened in 1873, it was built as a public centre for recreation, education and entertainment, intended to be a northern counterpart to the Crystal Palace in south London. Named after Princess Alexandra, wife of the future King Edward VII, it was designed to offer Londoners a place to enjoy culture, exhibitions and leisure activities. The original building was devastated by a fire just 16 days after opening. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1875, subsequently hosting concerts, exhibitions, sporting events and public attractions. In 1936, Ally Pally became a pioneering centre for television broadcasting when the BBC began the world’s first regular high-definition television service from the site. Today, Alexandra Palace remains a much-loved London landmark, hosting major concerts, festivals, exhibitions, sporting events and community activities. Its surrounding park provides green space and panoramic views across London, making it both a historic venue and a popular destination for visitors.
