Tires can completely change how an RC car handles—and proper tire prep can be the difference between a car that’s fast and one that traction rolls or slides all over the track.
In this video, I walk through my process for prepping RC tires for carpet racing, including how I prepare a fresh set of tires before they ever hit the track.
We’ll cover how and why I scuff the tire surface, what I’m looking for during prep, and how tire condition can affect grip, consistency, and handling. I’m demonstrating the process on the Losi NASCAR, but many of the basic principles apply to other rubber-tire RC racing classes as well.
🏁 In this video:
Why prep brand-new RC tires
How to scuff the tire surface
Using Scotch-Brite to prep RC tires
How much material you actually want to remove
What a properly prepped tire should look and feel like
New tires vs. worn tires
How tire condition affects traction
Recognizing tires that may be causing traction rolling
Getting your tires ready for high-grip carpet
Simple tire-prep mistakes to avoid
The goal isn’t to completely change the tire—it’s to create a consistent contact surface and get predictable grip out of the car.
If you’re racing Losi NASCAR, carpet oval, box stock, or other RC racing classes, understanding what your tires are doing is one of the easiest ways to become a better tuner and a faster driver.
