Las Vegas Street Photography with a $20 Broken Leica V-LUX 4

I gotta be honest... I don't hate shooting street with a zoom lens. I think I need to do it more often. Maybe these Leica V-LUX cameras are an easier way to do that. Biggest reason why? The V-LUX 4 has a constant aperture of f/2.8 no matter what focal length you're using. Does that matter for street? Eh, maybe not as much but only because I don't often shoot at f/2.8. Maybe I should, though. Get some long lens shots on lonely souls drifting through places like this - Las Vegas's Fremont Street. It was early morning when I and Brandon Talbot hit the streets to see what kind of action there'd be and there wasn't much. But there's something about photographing single souls making their way around a city. The isolation of it. The wonder - "Where are you going? What are you doing out right now?" Eventually it got busy as, of course, the light got harsher and harsher. Much of Fremont Street was cast in shadow due to the overhead awning that doubles as a low-res LED wall with regular programming blinking and flashing as you walk around. I found myself clinging to main intersections where the light could streak in at a low angle and separate illuminated individuals from the shadowy backgrounds of Fremont St. I tend not to photograph people who are unhoused, people who are struggling with addiction, mental health issues... while Fremont St. wasn't populated with these individuals in excess, there were many and there's often an impulse to photograph them. I think we need to resist. Perhaps on rare occasions where something profound is occurring... luckily this cowboy showed up and stared into his phone while coordinating what I assume is a rendezvous. I don't know that I'll keep the V-LUX 4... but with it having a broken LCD display it's to worth all that much. Maybe $100 or so? I did pick up a V-LUX 5 Type 7741 recently, and I look forward to seeing the difference between it and the V-LUX 4. Thanks, everyone, for watching (and reading). #leica #photography #streetphotography
