Every October, people drive past New York on their way to Vermont. They're missing the show. While New England gets the postcards, the hills along the Hudson burn red and gold, mist rises out of stone gorges in the Catskills, and the Adirondacks turn copper all the way to the summit.
In this video, we count down the 10 most beautiful fall towns in New York, from a tiny Catskills hamlet at the foot of a 260-foot waterfall to a mountain village where a wooden chute sends sleds flying across a frozen lake. Along the way: the "Grand Canyon of the East," a lake town that holds the coldest temperature ever recorded in the state, a city founded by whalers 120 miles from the ocean, and the arts colony that gave its name to a festival it never hosted.
For every town, we look at what makes it special in fall, its history, and what daily life there is really like, from hospitals and home prices to crowds and long winters.
Which town would you put at number one? Tell us in the comments.
