Could psychedelics eventually change how depression, PTSD, and other mental health conditions are treated?
Research into psilocybin and MDMA has moved from the fringes into serious clinical investigation. In this video, I explain the science from a pharmacist’s perspective—including what these drugs do in the brain, what clinical trials have found, and why promising research does not automatically mean FDA approval.
We’ll cover psilocybin and serotonin signaling, neuroplasticity, how MDMA affects serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, research involving depression, PTSD and alcohol use disorder, and the important safety concerns researchers are still working through.
I also explain why psychedelic clinical trials are very different from recreational use, the problem of functional unblinding, potential interactions with existing psychiatric medications, and where the FDA currently stands on psychedelic drug development.
The bottom line: Psychedelic medicine is showing real scientific promise, but important questions about safety, effectiveness, patient selection, medication interactions and long-term outcomes remain.
