A Brief look in May 1993 at Thornaby Station during the twilight years of British Rail's sectors. Thornaby Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD)—originally opened in June 1958 under depot codes 51L and TE—was a legendary powerhouse for Teesside rail operations, servicing everything from heavy steam to mainline diesel locomotives. Because getting direct access to the TMD itself wasn't easy, the cameraman set up camp on the Thornaby station platform to capture the local rail action. Though Thornaby was a relatively quiet station, this short session caught animteresting selection of classic British rail freight power—predominantly sporting the iconic triple-grey Railfreight livery—before the depot ultimately closed and was completely demolished in 2011. If you love vintage British Rail, heavy diesel traction, and lost rail infrastructure, this 1990s time capsule is for you! #ThornabyTMD #BritishRail #Railfreight #Class37 #Class60 #Class56 #TeessideRail #DieselLocomotive #Trainspotting #UKRailways #1990sRail #ThornabyStation
