Games have been writing down your failures for twenty years — and nobody ever told you. In 2005, Resident Evil 4 quietly scored every miss and every death, then handed you mercy. In 2014, Shadow of Mordor promoted the orc that killed you. The same year, Alien: Isolation learned which locker you keep hiding in. In 2015, Metal Gear Solid V started issuing helmets because you kept aiming at heads. In 2025, Hades II built tens of thousands of voice lines around your death count. And in October 2026, a Sony patent application went public that points a machine-learning model straight at how you play — and lets it rewrite the boss that killed you.
This is the obituary of free will in video games: five hidden systems, twenty years of quiet surveillance, and the one thing they all have in common.
