Deep beneath China's Yangtze River, a new high-speed railway link is dug by a 4,000-ton tunneling machine, commanded by a Gen-Z engineer who is only 25 years old. Liu Zheyu oversees the entire operation of Linghang, the world’s largest-diameter high-speed rail drill, managing everything from the machine's daily launches to its complex computer systems. Liu joined the project fresh out of college in 2023 when the drill was still on the drawing board. He also helped develop the world's largest-diameter vertical shaft boring machine Qiming and an innovative tunneling method to cross the Yangtze River by docking vertical and horizontal drills together. Where projects once relied on thousands of manual laborers underground, today's sites require fewer people but far higher technical skills, such as programming and advanced robotics. The entire tunnel is scheduled to open by the end of 2026. Once completed, high-speed trains will travel underwater at 350 km/h, cutting the commute from Chongming Island to downtown Shanghai to just 17 minutes. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
