The earlier Breakbeat Hardcore sound had evolved rapidly. The music was becoming faster, more melodic and increasingly euphoric, with huge piano riffs, emotional vocals and relentless Hardcore rhythms becoming central to the sound. Slipmatt had been at the forefront of the rave movement since its earliest days and became one of the DJs most closely associated with the evolution of Hardcore. By 1995, Happy Hardcore had developed into a major force within UK rave culture. Add MC Ruff and the legendary atmosphere of Labrynth, and you've got a genuine snapshot of the scene at full strength. 📡 LABRYNTH / SLIPMATT / MC RUFF Labrynth, based at the legendary Four Aces Club in Dalston, London, was one of the most important venues in UK rave history. The club hosted DJs and MCs from across the Hardcore, Jungle and Drum & Bass scenes and became a key part of London's underground music culture throughout the 1990s. Slipmatt's appearance at Labrynth places this recording right inside that golden era. Together with MC Ruff, this set captures the classic combination of DJ, MC and rave crowd that defined the live Hardcore experience. Labrynth. Slipmatt. MC Ruff. 1995. Proper old-skool rave history. He was one half of breakbeat hardcore group SL2, who had a 1992 UK hit with "On a Ragga Tip". Dubbed the "Godfather of Rave" these days, he was one of the key figures in the development of the early UK Rave sound as well as helping create Jungle and Happy Hardcore. Resident DJ for Raindance since 1989 and then from 1991 Fantazia, Helter Skelter, Dreamscape, World Dance and more. Co-founder and DJ on Raw FM in the late 80s, he also had shows on Kiss FM and many guest slots on many other stations including BBC Radio 1. https://www.discogs.com/artist/14987-... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slipmatt MC Ruff first started out MCing on pirate airwaves in London, but his first major break came when he was working as a sound boy for The Prodigy and he got a job as their tour MC. After The Prodigy MC Ruff went back to MCing on London pirate station, Dream FM. Due to his lyrical skills (he sung as well as MCing) which complimented the hardcore scene vibe, MC Ruff attained a weekly residency at the Labyrinth. Tragically Ruff died from heart trouble in 1998 at the age of 27 (coincidentally the same weekend that Stevie Hyper D. also died). RIP MC Ruff. https://www.discogs.com/artist/53839-... Labrynth was founded by Joe Wieczorek and originally hosted illegal warehouse rave parties during 1988 & 1989 at the height of the acid house scene. Through the 1990s musical styles progressed from house through hardcore and finally onto jungle and drum & bass. Resident DJs were Adrian Age, Vinyl Matt, Kenny Ken & Billy 'Daniel' Bunter. The Prodigy played their first live show at the club. When the Four Aces closed down, the club moved to Tottenham. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fou...
