On 9 June 1944, three days after D-Day, thousands of Soviet guns opened fire on the Finnish lines of the Karelian Isthmus. Stalin's goal was simple: knock Finland out of the war by force before the summer was over. Within three weeks, around 150,000 Soviet soldiers were attacking about 50,000 Finns at a crossroads called Tali and a village called Ihantala. It was the largest battle ever fought in the Nordic countries, and almost nobody outside Finland has heard of it.
This documentary tells the whole story. It starts with the Winter War and the Continuation War, Hitler's secret visit for Mannerheim's birthday, and the Soviet bombing of Helsinki. It follows the breakthrough at Valkeasaari and Kuuterselkä and the fall of Viipuri in a single day. Then comes Ribbentrop's visit to Helsinki and President Risto Ryti's personal promise to Hitler, the Panzerfausts and Stukas of Detachment Kuhlmey, and the day the United States broke off relations with Finland. The battle itself runs through the armoured counter-attack at Portinhoikka and the Finnish artillery at Ihantala, which could put around 250 guns onto a single target within minutes. It ends with the last encirclement at Ilomantsi, the Moscow Armistice, the war reparations, and the Lapland War.
Then the twist: Ryti resigned, Mannerheim declared that the promise had left office with him, and Finland made its own peace. Every other country that fought beside Germany in the East was occupied by the Red Army. Finland was not. Helsinki is one of only three European capitals at war that were never taken by an enemy army.
Real archival photographs and film only, including Finnish wartime SA-kuva photographs of the battle and Soviet LenTASS photos from the Karelian Isthmus, June 1944. No AI images in the video.
