The newest TikTok trend is "becoming a Chinese", but Tiana chats with one of Jamaica's original Chinese baddies, Tami Chin-Mitchell, on what growing up Chinese Jamaican really looked like. *Please note there is a section in this episode where the claim is made that there was Chinese influence on rice & peas. This is incorrect — I can acknowledge when we are wrong! The enslaved Africans would’ve been accustomed to rice before coming to the Caribbean, and the Europeans would’ve continued bringing rice to the Caribbean during slavery. One could say though that rice as an everyday staple did not infiltrate Jamaican food culture until Chinese indentureship, but rice & peas did exist in Jamaica before their arrival — and was probably a variation of the African jollof rice.* This episode is sponsored by Yummy Bakery. Thank you Yummy! A big thanks to the Murray Media & WongaMedia teams! Without you this episode would not be possible.
