For more than a hundred years, a box of bones sat forgotten on a museum shelf in Belgium. When scientists finally looked closer, they realized some of those bones were not animal at all. They were Neanderthal. And they carried the same marks as the horses and reindeer the hunters had processed.
Belgium was not the only place. Across Europe, cave after cave was hiding the same unsettling secret, and it has divided scientists for over a century.
In this video, we travel to four caves across Europe where Neanderthals did something to their own kind that we still struggle to understand. We look at what the bones really show, the three explanations scientists have proposed, and a 2025 study that changed the debate.
What is inside this video:
El Sidrón in Spain, where a family of twelve met the same fate 49,000 years ago
Moula-Guercy in France, where human and deer bones were treated exactly the same way
Krapina in Croatia, where the debate began in 1899
Goyet in Belgium, and the 2025 discovery that the victims were outsiders
Hunger, ritual or war: the three theories behind the evidence - The final twist: what our own ancestors did in Gough's Cave in England
