Campbell Avenue and Flying Whales, Tucson Arizona

The days have started to get pretty hot in the Sonoran Desert and we went on another, very early, Sunday morning ride in our beautiful hometown, Tucson. Campbell Avenue is a very scenic road, which feels very rural the closer you get to the Santa Catalina Mountains. Going south on Campbell, you have an incredible view of "the valley", downtown and the surrounding mountain ranges ... and it's a fairly windy road, which is especially fun, when you are on a motorcycle. Once we got back int town, we stopped at one of our favorite murals. "Joe Pagac’s mural is more than 5,000 square feet large, and can be found on the southeast corner of North Campbell Avenue and West Grant Road. The whales are a reference to muralist Robert Wyland’s series of 100 “Whaling Walls,” but the storms and saguaros make it perfectly Tucsonan. The monsoon clouds are also posed to look as though they’re spewing out of the whales. The symbolism of whales flying through the desert is a nod to the idea of thriving even in a harsh environment."
