He was standing on a wooden scaffold
beside a face that would outlive him.
The face was enormous.
The beard alone was taller than he was.
The hair fell in waves of stone
that had not yet been told they were hair.
Most of it was still mountain.
He was working on one curl.
Just one.
Somewhere above the ear.
I asked him, in my head, because I did not want to interrupt,
how long he had been at it.
Years, probably.
Maybe his whole working life.
Maybe his father had started it,
and his father before that,
and the curl he was carving today
would be finished by someone whose name he would never know.
I had come in thinking about my own small projects.
The things I keep almost finishing.
The things I abandon because they are taking
longer than I expected,
longer than feels dignified,
longer than the internet seems to allow.
And here was a man
cheerfully devoting an afternoon
to a single lock of hair
on a face he might not live to see completed.
He did not look defeated.
He looked employed by something larger than ambition.
That is the word that stayed with me.
Employed.
Not enslaved. Not burdened. Not behind schedule.
Employed by something that did not need to hurry
because it was already going to outlast everyone in the room.
I think a lot of my exhaustion
comes from working on things
that are exactly my own size.
Things that begin and end inside my lifetime.
Things that reward me, or do not,
in a timeframe I can personally witness.
The sculptor was not waiting for a reward.
The face was the reward.
The curl was the reward.
The scaffold creaking under his sandals was the reward.
He would climb down at the end of the day
having made the universe
one strand of hair more detailed than he found it.
That seems like enough.
That seems, actually, like more than most of us manage.
The music under this video is for the long work.
For the project that is bigger than this year.
For the thing you are building that nobody is clapping for yet.
For the curl of hair above the ear
that only you know is unfinished.
Climb up. Carve one. Climb down.
Tomorrow the face will still be there,
patient as stone,
waiting for the next small devotion.

Press play. Carve one small thing.
Let the big thing take as long as it takes.
