Ormurin Langi is the most famous Faroese ballad (kvæði), recorded around 1830 by Jens Christian Djurhuus based on centuries-old oral traditions. The epic song tells the story of the historic Viking Battle of Svolder around the year 1000, focusing on the Norwegian King Olav Tryggvason fighting aboard his legendary longship of the same name. It features a highly distinctive, pounding rhythm originally used to drive the traditional Faroese chain dance. This heavy, stomping beat would have been perfectly suited to sync the movements of oarsmen on a real Viking ship. Today, the ancient ballad has achieved worldwide fame through modern adaptations by Viking metal bands like Týr.
