[Verse 1] Sir Roland rode to the dragon, so proud and so bold, With armor that glittered like silver and gold. “Stand back, you peasants, the hero is here!” Then the dragon breathed fire, and Roland disappeared. He ran down the hill with his pride in a spin, Blaming his armor for failing to win. “My armor ain't strong enough!” he cried in despair, Then ordered more metal to cover his rear. [Chorus] My armor ain't strong enough! My armor ain't strong enough! I'll buy a little more, then I'll show that beast, I'll cover every inch, from my head to my feet! My armor ain't strong enough! My armor ain't strong enough! I'll come back tomorrow, prepared for the fight, With enough shiny metal to blind out the light! [Verse 2] Back came brave Roland with a helmet twice wide, A breastplate, a backplate, and plates on each side. He strapped on some shoulder pads, gauntlets, and greaves, And metal protection for both of his feet. He rode to the dragon, convinced he'd prevail, But one puff of fire sent him fleeing the trail. “My armor ain't strong enough!” he declared once again, “Add another thick layer, and I'll conquer him then!” [Verse 3] They loaded a wagon with armor galore, Six horses were needed to drag him uphill once more. Roland wore a helmet, a helmet on that, A visor, a faceplate, and a steel cowboy hat. He had armor on elbows, his fingers, his toes, A metal umbrella, and plates on his nose. “Stand back, you peasants, the hero is here!” Then he tried taking one step and toppled with fear. [Verse 4] Now Roland couldn't walk, couldn't bend, couldn't sit, He was stuck in his armor, a metallic lump of grit. They pushed him uphill on a cart with a squeak, He hadn't seen daylight for more than a week. The dragon breathed fire, and the wagon caught flame, Roland rolled down the hillside, still shouting his claim. “My armor ain't strong enough!” he cried from the ground, “Bring me more metal! Make sure it's more round!” [Verse 5] They built him a suit that was ten stories tall, With a helmet so huge it could cover a hall. The wagon collapsed, and the horses all fled, Roland was buried in armor from his toes to his head. He finally reached the dragon, but couldn't move an inch, The dragon stepped forward, and Roland couldn't flinch. All that metal came crashing, a deafening clatter, And Roland learned too late what was really the matter. [Final chorus] My armor ain't strong enough! My armor ain't strong enough! He bought every plate that a blacksmith could sell, But armor can't save you when you cant fight as well. My armor ain't strong enough! My armor ain't strong enough! He piled it up higher, he piled it up tall, Now Roland is the armor, and the armor is all. [Outro] The dragon took the treasure and went back to his cave, While Roland lay buried beneath the gear he gave. For armor won't save you, no matter how tall, When you never learned how to fight at all...
