Hyundai Staria SA Launch

The H1 bus has been a success story for Hyundai in SA currently holding a 25% market share in it's segment. Taking into account that the H1 is 11 years old, this is a great achievement. The challenge was how to replace the H1 and this time Hyundai have gone for Revolution not Evolution as is often the case in the motor industry. The Staria is extremely futuristic in design, especially when viewed from the front. The bold grille, available in either black or copper colouring and the light bar across the front of the top Luxury model, make a statement. All models are powered by the proven 2.2L diesel engine coupled to the 8 speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The "drive by wire" system for the gearbox is the same as the new Santa Fe and Pallisade models. Interestingly, in the Staria the engine is tuned to provide 130kW and 430Nm. On the road, the vehicle with 3 on board always felt like it had sufficient power for overtaking and excellent smooth cruising. Open road fuel economy on the launch was around 8l/100km. Safety was a priority in the design and technology like hot- stamping and the fact that the entire side of the 5.3m long vehicle is a single body panel combine to create an extremely strong and safe vehicle. Moving up to the Luxury version, this provides an extremely high spec level. Items like lane-departure, cross traffic warning and active cruise control are all present. A really interesting item is the forward camera that shows on the dashboard in front of the driver when you indicate either left or right, showing you where you are turning. Passenger comfort includes leather trim, automated sliding side doors, 2nd row captains chairs that include heating and cooling ( as do the front seats), the ability to swivel the 2nd row trough 180 degrees to face rearwards to allow meetings, air-conditioning vents in the roof in the rear with separate controls and USB ports for all 4 rows of seats.
