Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 Whistler's Mother James McNeill Whistler 1871 Painted in London in 1871, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 is one of the most recognized images ever made by an American artist. It shows Anna McNeill Whistler, the painter's mother, seated in profile against a bare wall. It was rejected, then reluctantly accepted, by the Royal Academy in 1872. Two decades later the French state bought it, and it has hung in Paris ever since. In between, it became something its painter never intended: a national symbol, a postage stamp, a shorthand for motherhood itself. Whistler saw a different picture entirely. This video is about the gap between the two and what he was actually making, and what the world decided it was. Sources & Further Reading: Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
