Oracy, why CLIL does it better. The background to this podcast is the current UK Education Secretary Lucy Powell speech placing oracy on a par with numeracy and literacy. It’s about time! https://shorturl.at/MNgOl There is a piece in the Guardian by Simon Jenkins in response to this he bashes Maths a bit in the process. https://shorturl.at/EP0my By focusing explicitly on the language of the curriculum during the teaching of the curriculum, CLIL better develops awareness and knowledge of the language of learning, of academic expression and by exploiting interactive communicative activities is better placed to practice this language. Also, taking a CLIL approach would mean that ultimately ALL subjects have a focus on learners being able to express their understanding of the curriculum content by default. AND if Michael Rosen says it’s good, it must be! https://shorturl.at/NDXqz (Podcast on Oracy May 2026 - https://www.bbc.com/audio/play/m002w621) Oracy - The Transformative Power of Finding Your Voice is mentioned by Neil Mercer (we have to provide oracy, it’s a human right). Phil mentions the Voice21 project. - https://shorturl.at/7JHir Is it a fad or essential? In the podcast Aiineducation – https://aipodcast.education/dr-phil-c... guest Phil Cummins, there is some idea that the focus on oracy is about ‘becoming good at debating’, this is totally the wrong end of the stick. There is also the argument that being able to speak out is a personality trait. Again, questionable. Curiously, in the same series, Kelly Web-Davies promotes talking to write, particularly with AI, talk, brainstorm, make notes and bullet lists, structure them, then engage with AI. https://aipodcast.education/inside-ox... In conclusion, mention is made of the the LLEN post on language development throughout education in Australia. https://shorturl.at/tEnkn
