Why is Craigievar Castle pink? Why is the Great Hall of Stirling Castle bright yellow? And why are so many other Scottish castles bare grey stone? The answer will change the way you look at every castle in Scotland. In this film, a lime mason working on Craigievar's "Pink Again" restoration tells the story of a Baltic merchant called Danzig Willie, an architect's idea in 1824, a Victorian fashion for bare stone, a disastrous coat of cement in the 1970s, and the scientists who found the original colours of Scotland's castles. From harling and limewash to earth pigments, King's Gold, the "plastic bag" of cement and thirteen thousand litres of pink lime, this is the true story of what Scottish castles really looked like. Which castle do you think should be repainted? Tell us in the comments. SOURCES National Trust for Scotland – Pink again: Craigievar Castle reopens: https://nts.org.uk/stories/pink-again...
