Why the TEUTONIC KNIGHTS Fought the MAMLUKS for 30 Years | History For Sleep

For nearly 30 years, the TEUTONIC KNIGHTS and the MAMLUKS stood on opposite sides of the final struggle for the Holy Land. By the late 13th century, the Crusader states were under enormous pressure. The Mamluk Sultanate had emerged as the dominant military power in Egypt and Syria, while the great military orders — including the Teutonic Knights, Knights Templar, and Knights Hospitaller — fought to defend the remaining Crusader strongholds. The Teutonic Knights had originally been founded during the Crusades as a German hospital brotherhood before developing into a powerful military order. But before they became famous for their campaigns in Prussia and the Baltic, they fought in the eastern Mediterranean against some of the most formidable armies of the medieval world. This documentary explores the roughly 30-year period of confrontation between the Teutonic Knights and the Mamluks, from the rise of Sultan Baybars to the dramatic collapse of the Crusader presence in the Holy Land. We examine the fall of major Crusader fortresses, the Mamluk attack on Montfort Castle in 1271, the changing balance of power in the region, and the final defense of Acre in 1291. We also look at why the Teutonic Knights eventually shifted their attention away from the Holy Land and toward northeastern Europe.
