In this video, I visit the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Nagoya to see the retired Doctor Yellow Shinkansen.
Doctor Yellow is Japan’s famous yellow inspection train, also known as the “doctor of the Shinkansen.” It checks the tracks and overhead wires of the Tokaido Shinkansen while traveling at speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour.
The JR Central Doctor Yellow between Tokyo and Osaka retired in January 2025, and the remaining Doctor Yellow trains operated by JR West are also scheduled to retire in 2027. Since seeing one in service is becoming even more difficult, I went to the railway museum to see the real train before it disappears from Japan’s railways.
Inside the museum, I also explored historic Shinkansen trains, including the 0 series and 700 series, learned about the history of the Tokaido Shinkansen, and saw Japan’s next-generation maglev train.

If you are interested in Japanese trains, Shinkansen history, or rare railway vehicles, this is a museum you should visit in Nagoya.
