WALK BY FAITH
For those who are in Christ Jesus, there is no condemnation. This song is built on Romans 8 and 2 Corinthians 4–5, and calls the believer to live by the Spirit, not the flesh, and to walk by faith, not by sight.
NO CONDEMNATION
The chorus comes from Romans 8:1–2. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk according to the Spirit and not the flesh, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set them free from the law of sin and death. This freedom is not earned; it belongs to those who are in Christ.
FLESH AND SPIRIT
Verse 1 draws from Romans 8:6–9. To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Paul explains that the carnal mind is hostile toward God and cannot please Him (Romans 8:7–8). Believers are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in them. The verse closes by joining two of Paul's statements: we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and the life we now live, we live by faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20).
THE SPIRIT WHO HELPS
Verse 2 is drawn from Romans 8:26. In our weakness we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. The verse closes by joining two pictures from Scripture: being clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49) and putting on the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14; Galatians 3:27). Romans 8:9 calls Him the Spirit of Christ.
THE SPIRIT OF FAITH
Verse 3 comes from 2 Corinthians 4:13 and 16. Paul, having the same spirit of faith as the psalmist who wrote, "I believed, and therefore I have spoken," also believed and therefore spoke. For this reason he did not lose heart: though the outward man perishes, the inward man is renewed day by day.
WHAT IS UNSEEN
The outro is drawn from 2 Corinthians 4:18. The believer looks not at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen, for the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal.
THE ARTWORK
Christ stands on the left in radiant light, reaching toward a believer who walks forward on a path of light, looking up rather than down. The dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16), goes before him. Behind and below lie broken chains and shadowed figures, picturing the law of sin and death from which the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set him free (Romans 8:2). He walks by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
CHRIST AT THE CENTER
Every promise in this song rests on being in Christ Jesus. It is His Spirit who gives life, His work that removes condemnation, and His eternal glory the believer fixes their eyes on. Read Romans 8 and 2 Corinthians 4–5 for yourself, and walk by faith in the Son of God.
