Marjorie Post’s Marriage to E.F. Hutton Was Much CRUELER Than You Thought

Marjorie Merriweather Post inherited $20 million - roughly $500 million today - and became the richest woman in America. Then she trusted her fortune and her empire to the one man who would betray her from inside her own house. This documentary explores the untold story of Marjorie Post’s marriage to Wall Street titan E.F. Hutton - the co-founder of one of America’s most powerful brokerage firms. Together, they transformed her father’s cereal company into General Foods Corporation, built the legendary Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, and became one of the most prominent couples of the Gilded Age’s last generation. But behind the gates, Hutton was carrying on a sustained affair - with a woman introduced through Marjorie’s own daughter, at Marjorie’s own estate. What followed was a reckoning that involved silk threads laid across doorways, talcum powder on marble floors, and a divorce that left Hutton with nothing. This Marjorie Merriweather Post documentary traces her journey through four marriages, her years as Ambassador’s wife in Moscow - where she acquired one of the world’s great collections of Fabergé and Russian imperial art - and the legacy she built at Hillwood, the estate she turned into a museum that still stands today. Watch to discover how the cereal heiress who lost everything to betrayal became the woman Washington called “The Empress.” 📚 Sources & References: Nancy Rubin, American Empress: The Life and Times of Marjorie Merriweather Post (1995) TIME magazine profile (1967) Library of Congress archival photographs National Register of Historic Places - Mar-a-Lago and Hillwood Estate records 📌 Research Integrity: All claims and biographical facts presented in this documentary are sourced from published interviews, biographies, and verified journalism.
