Cause & Affection: Nantucket Eelgrass

In his book The Nature Principle, Richard Louv wrote: "We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see." In this film that premiered at the Nantucket Shorts Festival The Oika ecologist Dr. Rich Blundell expresses his love for an overlooked island habitat. In 2024 he helped the Maria Mitchell Association and the Great Harbor Yacht Club Foundation deploy a state-of-the-art oceanographic buoy to measure key water-quality metrics in Nantucket Harbor. On the same day, he also deployed a second sensor, the artist, Rita Leduc. This human one was tuned to the aesthetic and affective dimensions of the eelgrass ecosystem.
