At 30 we leave home for work. At 40 we worry about money. At 50 we wonder where the years went.
More than five centuries ago, Kabir sang this same life in a single bhajan, and asked what we actually did with it.
Kabir Sahab · Raag Jogiya mood
Lyrics —
— Transliteration —
Paani kera budbuda, as maanus ki jaat.
Dekhat hi chhip jaayega, jyon taara parbhaat.
Umar sab dhokhe mein kho diyo re.
Paanch baras ka bhola-bhaala, bees mein jawaan bhayo.
Tees baras mein maaya ke kaaran, desh videsh gayo.
Chaalis baras ant ab laage, baadhai moh gayo.
Dhan dhaam putra ke kaaran, nis din soch bhayo.
Kaal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab.
Pal mein parlay hoyegi, bahuri karega kab.
Baras pachaas kamar bhai tedhi, sochat khaat paryo.
Ladka bahuri bolan laage, boodha mar na gayo.
Baras saath-sattar ke bheetar, kesh safed bhayo.
Vaat pitt kaph gher liyo hai, nainan neer baho.
Kahai Kabir suno bhai saadho, chola chhooti gayo.
— Meaning —
Opening doha: A human life is a bubble on water; it vanishes as quickly as the stars at dawn.
Refrain: You lost your whole life to illusion.
At five, innocent; at twenty, young. At thirty, chasing wealth, you left for other lands.
At forty the end starts to show, yet attachment only grew; for money, home and children you worried day and night.
Inserted doha: What you would do tomorrow, do today; what you would do today, do now. In a moment everything may end — when will you do it then?
At fifty your back bent, you lay brooding on your cot; your son and daughter-in-law began to say, 'Why hasn't the old man died yet?'
By sixty or seventy your hair turned white, illness closed in, tears ran from your eyes. No devotion, no company of the wise, no good deeds done.
Kabir says: listen, seekers — the garment of the body has slipped away.
