Join G. Willikers on a pilgrimage to the Greek island of Patmos, where nearly two thousand years ago the Apostle and Evangelist St. John was exiled for his testimony of Jesus Christ. What was intended to silence an old Apostle instead became one of the most extraordinary events in Christian history: here St. John received the divine vision recorded in the Book of Revelation.
After crossing the Aegean Sea, Willikers explores the quiet island, the village of Chora and the great Monastery of St. John the Theologian before descending into the Cave of the Apocalypse—the sacred place where Christian tradition holds that St. John lived, prayed, and heard the voice of God.
But this is more than a journey to an important Christian shrine. Patmos raises questions that apply to every Christian. What happens when God's plans for us are different from our own? Can apparent defeat become victory? Can suffering, isolation and circumstances we would never have chosen become the very means by which God draws us closer to Him?
The pilgrimage finally leads underground, into the humble cave associated with one of the greatest revelations ever given to mankind. There the words of Christ still confront every pilgrim: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.”
G. Willikers traveled a long way to visit the place where St. John heard the voice of Christ. But perhaps the important question is not whether John heard Him.
The question is whether we do.
