The entire history of FRANCE in18 minutes: why this one territory kept rebuilding itself after conquest, plague, famine and invasion — while its neighbors did not.
This video compresses more than two thousand years of continuous crisis, conquest, revolution and rebirth into a single journey across one piece of land. We begin with the La Tène hillforts of central Gaul and the Roman conquest that ended at Alesia in 52 BCE, then trace the Frankish merger after the collapse of imperial Rome, the Capetian royal machine, the Hundred Years' War and the Joan of Arc moment, the Wars of Religion, and the Revolution that turned subjects into citizens. Along the way we use three biological mechanisms — structural plasticity, endosymbiosis and hormesis — to explain why shock kept producing stronger institutions instead of permanent collapse, and why Napoleon's Civil Code outlived the man who wrote it. The arc closes with 1870, 1940, and the postwar construction of a Europe in which another Franco-German war became structurally impossible.
