If you can’t be here in person, this is the closest experience you can get to being there.
Join me on a relaxing walking journey through Celle, one of the most beautiful historic towns in Lower Saxony. The walk begins at the magnificent New Town Hall and gradually leads toward Celle’s historic heart, passing the beautiful French Garden, churches, trees, flowers, ponds, peaceful streets, and historic architecture.
🏛️ THE NEW TOWN HALL
The walk begins at Celle’s magnificent New Town Hall. Today it houses the city administration, but the complex originally belonged to the former Heidekaserne military barracks, whose construction began in 1873. After several periods of use, it was transformed into the New Town Hall.
🌿 THE FRENCH GARDEN
From there, I follow the edge of the beautiful Französischer Garten — the French Garden — a protected historic garden directly south of the old town.
Its origins go back to the 17th century, when French court gardeners worked for Duke Georg Wilhelm. The famous double avenue of lime trees was planted in 1695 and 1696. Today, the garden offers peaceful paths, trees, flowers, lawns and a beautiful pond.
Along the route, you will also see churches, greenery, water and changing views as the walk gradually approaches the historic center.
🏡 CELLE’S HISTORIC HEART
Celle has more than 700 years of history. The city was established at its present location in 1292 by Duke Otto the Strict and became closely connected with the Welf dynasty and the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
The historic center is especially famous for its extraordinary collection of more than 500 beautifully preserved half-timbered buildings. Their decorated façades, gables, inscriptions and wooden details reflect different periods of Celle’s history.
The Old Town Hall on the historic market square is another highlight. One of Celle’s oldest buildings, it developed over centuries, and its northern gable is a remarkable example of Weser Renaissance architecture.
This is truly a walk through time:
From the New Town Hall...
through the French Garden, churches and peaceful green spaces...
and finally into the historic heart of Celle, surrounded by centuries-old half-timbered houses.
❤️ WHAT MAKES THIS WALK SPECIAL
