In 1942, a forest ranger in the Indian Himalayas found hundreds of human skeletons around a tiny frozen lake at 16,500 feet. Wartime officials feared they were Japanese soldiers. Scientists later blamed a deadly hailstorm 1,100 years ago. Then DNA turned the whole story upside down: some of the dead had ancestry like people from Greece and Crete, and they died only about 200 years ago. This is Roopkund, the Skeleton Lake of Uttarakhand, India. Who were these people, and why did they all come here?
