Å (2026) is a conceptual EP by the Swedish band Wormwood, released on August 7, 2026, via Sound Pollution (in association with Black Lodge Records). It consists of just two long tracks, showcasing the group's signature style while incorporating new elements that reflect the lineup's ongoing evolution. Formed in Stockholm in 2014, Wormwood is known for melodic, atmospheric black metal heavily influenced by Scandinavian melancholy, folk elements, cinematic passages, and emotional intensity. Their sound blends tremolo picking, aggressive vocals, dense atmospheres, and melody, shifting between the epic and the raw. The EP aligns with this identity but stands out due to a more contemporary, "gritty" concept inspired by Stockholm’s underground circles—"filthy stories" that the band aims to portray as realistically as possible through music. The idea had existed for some time but hadn't fit into previous albums or planned full-length releases. The first track received an official music video (released in July 2026), directed and produced in collaboration with Svartna Film. The band promised a video capable of captivating and moving viewers, while also potentially "repulsing" them. The lyrics for "Yra|Extas" (music by Tobias Rydsheim; lyrics by Nine and Tobias Rydsheim) explore themes of escapism, deep wounds, hollow words, lifelong pain, and a freezing wind of anguish and darkness, featuring references to an "å" (Swedish for "river"—a layer of meaning suggested by the EP's title). The result is described as a refined yet uncompromising sound that marries technical brilliance with raw emotional power: melodic intensity, atmospheric depth, and an artistic vision that continues to push boundaries. The EP reinforces Wormwood’s position as one of the most distinctive and innovative forces in contemporary Swedish extreme metal, following four full-length albums (including the “Trilogy of Death” comprising Nattarvet, Arkivet, and The Star), a previous EP, and a live release. In short, Å is a concise, dense, and conceptual work that deepens the band’s identity, leaning into an urban, gritty realism while retaining the atmospheric structures and Scandinavian melancholy that define them, all while introducing new textures.
