Dashain 2026

Dashain is Nepal's biggest 15-day Hindu festival—celebrated from October 11 to October 25, 2026 - symbolising the victory of good over evil and the triumph of Goddess Durga. Ghatasthapana (Day 1): The festival begins by sowing barley or maize seeds to grow sacred Jamara in a prayer room. Tika and Blessings (Day 10 - Bijaya Dashami): Family members gather so elders can apply a mixture of vermilion, rice, and yogurt (Tika) to their foreheads, present Jamara, and share blessings for prosperity, health, and happiness alongside gifts of dakshina (money). Festive Customs: Building towering bamboo swings (Linge Ping) in villages and public spaces, flying colorful kites, and enjoying family feasts featuring traditional foods like sel roti and mutton. Global Celebration: Celebrated intensely across Nepal, regional pockets of India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and by the global Nepali diaspora.
