An Angel Meeting Me and may be we will almost fall in love... I will look into his eyes, and he into mine— my one single eye, (the unfortunate other blinded by a disciplinizing slap) and we will agree, adjust that Love can be Blind. And he, healthy boy well-fed, white with his rosy cheeks, will wonder about me, pity my bony body, those thin ribs and worry and feel my twisted ears and the scars on my hands, (reminders of the flirtation of my skin and a cruel cane) and perhaps lift my skirt... Before he learns the greater horrors, I owe him the truth of me— So, I will say to him: "I went to school". Ilavenil #MeenaKandasamy, born 1984) is an Indian poet, fiction writer, translator and activist from Chennai , Tamil Nadu , India . As a writer, Meena Kandasamy focuses mainly on caste annihilation, feminism and linguistic identity. One of her first collections, Touch was published in August 2006, with a foreword by Kamala Das. #embraceequity, #readaloudchannel, #poetry, #womensday, #Dalit, #womensmonth, #Dalitwoman, #feminism, #struggleforidentity, #resistance, #literature, #rebellion, #yamunadevi, #meenakandasamy, #womanartist, The poet Meena Kandasami relates how an angel met her . She says that the angel would perhaps fall in love with her . She too would love him . She would look into his eyes and he would look into hers , but she has only one eye . The unfortunate other eye was blinded by a slap from an authority figure . But the angel and she will agree on it that love is blind . The poet than describes the angel as a healthy boy , he would be surprised at seeing how thin and bony the young girl is, he would pity her . He will see her hands that are canned and the sexual atrocities her body has gone through. She feels she must let him know the truth and so she says “ I went to school “. Here kandasamy shows how Dalit women are exploited in a way which is neither experienced by upper caste women or Dalit men . They are systematically denied education or else I’ll treated in institutions. Untouchability was officially abolished in 1950 , but discrimination against Dalits remained pervasive that in 1989 the government passed legislation known as the prevention of Atrocities Act .Some of her poems include #Facingthemusic, #Shame, #Narration, The worst facet of #Dalit women’s lives as represented in poetry is the issue of untouchability . Dr of sociolinguistics, Meena kandasamy works closely with issues of caste and gender and how society puts people into stereotypical roles on these categories. She has faced threats for her fearless criticism of the fanatic - extremist Hindu society. But she always maintains that such criticism should not hinder one’s writing or creative process . #maenglishdalitpoetry, #maenglish ,
