🇬🇧😂 Grim? Minging? Dodgy? Gutted? British English has some brilliant slang words for describing bad situations, disgusting things, and those moments when everything goes wrong!
In this reaction, I'm checking out Smashing English's guide to 11 common British slang words and phrases that mean “bad.” As an American, I'm discovering how Brits express annoyance, disappointment, disgust, and frustration — and some of these expressions are absolutely brilliant! 😂
From calling something “pants” or “rubbish” to describing something as “rank,” “vile,” or “minging,” we're exploring the words that help make British English so distinctive. We'll also look at what it means to be “gutted,” “miffed,” “cheesed off,” “daft,” or dealing with something a bit “dodgy.”
🇬🇧 The 11 British slang words and phrases:
Grim — terrible, unpleasant, or gross
Minging — disgusting
Rank — disgusting or bad-smelling
Vile — extremely unpleasant or awful
Pants — rubbish, poor quality, or an expression of frustration
Daft — silly or foolish
Dodgy — suspicious, untrustworthy, or unstable
Gutted — deeply disappointed
Rubbish — bad, or not very good at something
Miffed — annoyed or frustrated
Cheesed off — annoyed or angry
💬 Your turn, Brits! Which of these words do you use most often? Are there any that Americans tend to misunderstand? And what British slang word should I learn next? Let me know in the comments!
