Ka Wēkiu O Kamakou

Kamakou is a mountain on the island of Molokai and is a sacred place that I hold dear. This mountain provides the people of Molokai with food, water, plants for lei making and lāʻau lapaʻau. It takes a great effort to drive up there and one's vehicle will take a toll, making it somewhat untouchable to those who are unable to handle the long, rough, bumpy ride that exceeds an hour going up the mountain and down the mountain. Because of this great effort, it makes visiting this place even more special and more sacred. When I first wrote this song in September 2016, it had different words, a different meaning, and a different purpose. As my knowledge in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, music, and even life experiences increased over the years, so did the meaning and story of this song. This song tells of a love story between the lehua and their companion, the misty rain that dwells at Puʻu Kolekole, an area found up in Kamakou. There are multiple kinds of love in the universe, and this love that the lehua has for the misty rain is undying and never failing. So much so that they wear the mist on their body as an adornment, symbolizing their loyalty and love they have for the misty rain.
