World's 2nd Largest Mangrove Forest - Pichavaram | Day Trip from Pondicherry

Pichavaram is the second largest mangrove forest in the world. It is located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu about 13 Km from Chidambaram town and about 78 Km from Pondicherry. Today is the second day of our trip to Pondicherry and we are on a day trip to Pichavaram and two other places viz Nataraj temple at Chidambaram and Poompuhar. In the video we will just explore mangrove forest of Pichavaram through a boat ride. Pichavam tourist facility is run by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC). We drove from Pondicherry taking NH 32. At many places road construction are taking place and in the last few Kms you will have ride on country road to reach Pichavaram mangrove forest. The USP here is the boat ride that takes people right inside a mangrove forest. The types of boat and their cost are as follows: Row Boat 4 - Seater 60 Minutes Rs.400 Row Boat 6 - Seater 60 Minutes Rs.600 Motor Boat 8 - Seater 40 minutes Rs.1800 Motor Boat 8-Seaters 20 minutes Rs.800 The estuaries of river Vellar and Coleroon forms the Killai backwater and mangrove forest at Pichavaram. I read on the official website of Cuddalore district that there are 400 boat routes in Pichavaram. In India about 4975 Sq Km of area is under mangrove forest which is about 0.15% of total geographical area of India. Mangrove forest can be classified into three types: Very Dense mangrove forest, moderately dense mangrove forest and open mangrove forest. This is an unique experience of watching mangrove forest up close and I would recommend it for people.
