Lecture 8: Concentration Polarization, Membrane Cleaning & Scale Control
Welcome to Lecture 8 of the Complete Membrane Technology Course.
In this session, we wrap up Section 2 by exploring "Concentration Polarization" (CP)—a phenomenon unavoidable in membrane processes—and learning how to manage it. We also cover the essential maintenance protocols: cleaning strategies, chemical selection, and scale control.
🔹 What you will learn in this lecture:
Concentration Polarization (CP): Definition, causes, and how solute accumulation at the membrane surface increases resistance and osmotic pressure.
Filtration Resistances: Breakdown of Adsorption (Ra), Pore Blocking (Rp), Membrane (Rm), Cake Layer (Rc), and Polarization (Rcp) resistances.
Minimization Strategies: How to reduce CP using turbulence promoters, spacers, and increasing tangential shear velocity.
Membrane Cleaning: The difference between Physical cleaning (Backwashing/Flushing) and Chemical cleaning (CIP).
