"The Last Brother" is a melancholy alternative rock song inspired by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.’s poem "The Last Leaf". It tells the story of the youngest of three brothers—the one who lives long enough to watch the others grow old and pass away, until he becomes the last one left behind. A song about memory, aging, loneliness, and the quiet hope that when the final leaf falls, perhaps we do not fall alone. Lyrics: I was always the youngest one, Running where my brothers ran, Three shadows stretching down the road, Three voices calling me back home. I thought those days belonged to us, Like summer fields and evening sun, Never knowing, never asking Which of us would be the last one. I watched the gray come through their hair, Watched their hands begin to shake, One by one, the chairs went empty, One by one, the goodbyes came. I stood beside them at the grave, Heard the earth fall soft and low, Until the names that made me brother Were names on stones beneath the snow. Their children used to come around, And sit with me a little while, We'd talk about the days gone by, And I would see their fathers' smiles. But time pulled everyone away, And distance grew with passing years, Until the voices faded out, Like footsteps I could barely hear. So I learned to make conversation With the clerk behind the store, Stayed a little after paying Just to talk a minute more. Sometimes I'd call without a reason, Just to hear somebody say my name, But everyone had somewhere to be, And I learned not to complain. Now the mirror holds an old man That my brothers never knew, Bent a little at the shoulders, With their faces showing through. Some nights I swear I hear them laughing Like we did when we were young, And for a moment I'm their brother— Not the last remaining one. There are no footsteps in the hallway, There are no voices at the door. Just the clock beside my chair Counting what it's counted before. I don't ask for tomorrows. I've been waiting long enough. And when the last leaf lets go, Maybe I won't fall alone. 🎵 Listen, Follow & Support UnimatrixMelody 🎧 Stream my music, visit the merch store, and follow me on your favorite platforms: https://thelinktree.com/unimatrixmelody Thank you for listening and supporting independent music! #TheLastBrother #UnimatrixMelody #AlternativeRock #MelancholyMusic #EmotionalRock #IndieMusic #OriginalMusic #PoetryInspired #TheLastLeaf #OliverWendellHolmes #SongsAboutLife #SongsAboutAging #Loneliness #Brothers #IndependentMusic
