The Real Mob Bosses Behind Scorsese’s Casino

Explore the shocking history of the Kansas City crime family and the violent downfall of boss Giuseppe 'Nick' Civella. While secretly orchestrating a multi-million-dollar skimming pipeline out of Las Vegas casinos like the Stardust and Fremont, Civella's empire unraveled due to a ruthless turf war in Kansas City's River Quay. From gruesome trunk murders and military-grade riverfront bombings to the brazen Virginian Tavern massacre, witness how street-level greed forced the FBI to launch Operation Strawman. Learn how undercover federal wiretaps and Carl 'Tuffy' DeLuna's meticulously kept notebooks exposed syndicate ties across Chicago, Cleveland, and Milwaukee, permanently ending the American Mafia's reign in Las Vegas and inspiring Martin Scorsese's cinematic classic, Casino. The script chronicles the rise and fall of the Kansas City crime family led by Nick Civella. Despite orchestrating a massive, untraceable casino skimming operation in Las Vegas funded by Teamster loans, Civella's empire collapsed after initiating a violent turf war over tavern leases and adult entertainment venues in Kansas City's River Quay district. The ensuing car-trunk murders, massive commercial bombings, and the violent feud with the Spero brothers prompted the FBI's Operation Strawman. Wiretaps and seized ledgers directly linked Midwest mafia bosses to the Las Vegas skim, ultimately destroying the syndicate's power and providing the real-life basis for Martin Scorsese's film Casino.
