Why are so many modern Kenyan men working, earning, spending and still reaching the end of life without the financial security, assets, or support system they thought they would have? In this video, we examine the uncomfortable question behind the Bedsitter / 1 Bedroom Death Sentence. Using the recently reported death of a Kenyan TikToker and the public controversy surrounding the final years and burial of one Mr. B., we look beyond the headlines and ask bigger questions about money, masculinity, lifestyle, relationships, family, retirement, assets, and the consequences of building a life without a long term financial plan. The Tiktoker's story has raised questions about financial vulnerability, health, social support, and what happens when someone becomes dependent on others during a difficult period. The other one's story raises a different set of questions: family responsibility, retirement, medical expenses, competing family narratives, financial obligations, and what happens to a man's relationships and resources when he becomes older and more vulnerable. This is NOT an argument that living in a bedsitter or one bedroom apartment automatically means someone will die broke or alone. The real question is: What are you building beyond the place you currently live in? A salary is not the same thing as wealth. A nice car is not an asset simply because it looks expensive. Having children does not automatically guarantee support in old age. Having a partner does not replace financial planning. And earning money today does not guarantee financial security tomorrow. In this video, we discuss: • Why income without asset building can leave people financially vulnerable • The difference between looking successful and actually being financially secure • Lifestyle inflation and the pressure to appear wealthy • Why Kenyan men need to think about retirement before retirement arrives • The importance of emergency funds and insurance • Building assets instead of only accumulating expenses • Financial independence and personal responsibility • Family expectations, relationships and financial obligations • What happens when health problems interrupt your income • Why your housing situation and choice of friends should be part of a bigger financial strategy • Why financial planning matters before a crisis forces you to start The goal is not to judge the deceased or pretend we know everything about their private lives. It is to ask a difficult question while there is still time to do something about it: If your income stopped tomorrow, what would actually protect you?
