In August 1590 John White came back to Roanoke Island to find his own family and the colony gone. The houses were taken down, and one word was cut into a gatepost: CROATOAN. In 1587 Walter Raleigh's second Virginia venture landed more than a hundred English men, women and children on Roanoke Island. Their governor, John White, sailed home for supplies, leaving behind his daughter Eleanor and his granddaughter Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas. The Spanish Armada and war at sea kept him away for three years. When he returned he found the settlement dismantled, his chests dug up and spoiled, 'CRO' carved on a tree and CROATOAN on a palisade post, but no Maltese cross, the distress sign the colonists had agreed to carve if they left under duress. The video follows White's own 1590 account, Jamestown era reports of survivors living inland, the 2012 'Site X' patch on White's map, and the recent Hatteras and Albemarle excavations. It lands on the best supported answer, that the colonists dispersed and were absorbed among Croatoan and inland Algonquian communities. The thread that still does not fit is why no confirmed English grave and no unambiguous colonist artifact has ever been dated to them. The video separates this record clearly from the 'Dare Stones' forgeries and the legend of the white doe. 0:00 John White Returns to Roanoke 1:03 Raleigh's Virginia Venture 3:38 Virginia Dare Is Born 7:09 The Armada Year 9:35 CROATOAN on the Gatepost 12:51 Survivors at Ocanahonan 15:10 The Patch on White's Map 16:54 Not One Grave 18:14 The Lost Colony of Roanoke 19:57 The Word on the Post Further reading: John White: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_White Virginia Dare: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgini...
